Skills Development

Build a foundation for academic success at Adelphi and beyond.

The principle of skills development is an integral part of our philosophy and the foundation upon which we deliver all of our tutoring services. Keeping this skills-oriented mission in mind, our service delivery approach is designed to help students pursue excellence in their academic and post-academic endeavors through both reinforcing essential skills for academic success and fostering academic independence.

Below are some examples of what we refer to as “essential skills” for academic success, areas that we focus on developing throughout all of our service models (one-on-one and small group tutoring, workshops, etc.) in all academic areas or subjects offered. Students who would like to more closely focus on honing these skills can schedule a tutoring appointment specifically for help with an individual skill.

The Learning Center’s Essential Skills for Academic Success:

  • time management
  • studying
  • note-taking
  • critical reading
  • test-taking
  • critical thinking
  • research
  • interpersonal communication (public speaking)
  • writing (tutoring offered through the Writing Center)
